THE LAST SCULPTURE!!!!!!!!!!!

Six brushstrokes(1997)
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997)

Pop art is the short form for popular art and it refers to a modern style that is enjoyed by many people. It was an art movement in the 60s which drew inspiration from popular culture. Pop artists took their imagery from movies, comic strips, advertising billboards and usual everyday objects. As for some artists, they duplicated the beer bottles, comic strips, road signs and similar objects in sculptures, paintings and collages. Some of the prominent American pop artists were Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist.

Lichtenstein was best known for his large paintings based on comic strips. One day when he was looking at the comic strips to get ideas for his art, he saw a comic book character of a mad artist. The mad artist was painting two large brush strokes to cross the face of a person who was haunting him. Lichtenstein then got the idea of doing a painting of a large brushstroke. Thus, he completed his first brushstroke painting in 1965 and his first brushstroke sculpture in 1981. Since then, the brushstroke has become a common subject in his pop art.

Here are some snapshots on Roy Lichtenstein's pop art. Aren't they interesting?

Aren' they very beautiful? It indeed took a very long time to complete these sculptures which represent various types of brushstrokes!

Facing it is a triangular piece of reclaimed land called Marina Centre - it is home to a large convention centre called Suntec City, mega shopping malls, 5-star hotels, our latest pride - Esplanade - theatres on the bay.....and lots of beautiful PUBLIC ART.
